Dwyane Wade, a basketball star in the USA, has a 12-year-old daughter, Zaya, who a year ago came out of the closet identifying as trans.

The Miami Heat player, in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres this week, said what every father should say at a time like this: that it is his “job” to inform himself to understand her.

The athlete said that he and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, are proud parents and allies of LGBTs in the search for rights.

“We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously. So when one of our kids comes in with a question or a problem, it’s our job to listen to them and give them the best information and answers we can.”

“When Zaya said to us 'look, I want to talk to you. I'm moving forward, I'm ready to live my truth and I want you to refer to me as she/her. I would love for you to call me Zaya”, said Wade about the moment his daughter came out.

“We want to make sure we give our daughter the best opportunity to be the best version of herself.”

In addition to Zaya, Wade and Union have three other children, in English.
