Religious bodies declare themselves in favor of gay marriage in Scotland

An alliance of religious groups has announced support for the introduction of gay marriage in Scotland. The Catholic Church is not part of this collective. The group comprises: liberal Jews, the Metropolitan Community Church, Quakers, Unitarians and the Pagan Federation.

Religious entities will hold an event this Wednesday (28) with the Youth of Parliament defending the change in Scottish civil union law. Two religious leaders participate in the event. Rabbi Mark Solomon claims that changing the law will "even more value family." Phil Lucas of the Quakers reports that his church has been holding gay unions for more than 15 years.

The leaders of the Catholic Church have already declared themselves against the legalization of gay marriage and told the current government that they will lose the support of more than 800 Catholics. Cardinal Keith O'Brien said the approval of civil unions between homosexuals is "a grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right and that gay parents cannot properly raise a child."

The Scottish government has tried to calm the spirits of Catholics by saying that it is a civil union and that no church will be forced to perform gay marriages.
