“We were very in love”, says Ney Matogrosso about his relationship with Cazuza

TV Globo is preparing the special "Por Toda a Minha Vida", about Cazuza's life. Just like in the film "Cazuza – O Tempo Não Para", singer Ney Matogrosso found it "very strange" not to have been consulted by the broadcaster to provide information that would contribute to the fidelity of the script.

"I didn't even know that this Globo special would cover my story with Cazuza. I find it very strange that they were doing this without consulting me. I only found out because they called an advisor asking me to ask what car I had when I met Cazuza", Ney revealed to reporter Débora Bergamasco, from the Mônica Bergamo column, in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo on Sunday (29/03).

In the interview, the singer states that his story with Cazuza is "the only one who can tell" because "he was the only one left".

Their first meeting took place in Ipanema, Rio, in 1979. Cazuza arrived at the beach with a friend. Ney, upon seeing Cazuza, asked: "'Who is this kid with you?'. Because he was a kid. He was 18 years old, and I was 39. We went crazy, but nothing happened," he said.

The singer reports that, one day, this same friend came to his house with Cazuza and then "everything happened". "I lived in Alto Leblon, in a three-story apartment and my room was on the third floor. She arrived, went upstairs, we talked and said: 'Cazuza is downstairs'. I sent for him. And he came. There was a garden in my room . Everything happened there."

Ney and Cazuza's relationship lasted a short time, "about four months of flames". According to the singer, the biggest difficulty was when Cazuza's family found out. "We went everywhere together, we didn't hide it from anyone. The problem was that he had a homosexual relationship with someone famous. Imagine: João Araújo's son is dating Ney. Those who didn't already know about his sexuality found out." Cazuza's parents ordered him to go to Switzerland immediately. "He didn't want to go. I said: 'Stop being stupid. Go. You won't miss this opportunity, it won't change anything, when you come back I'll be waiting for you'", he said.

Ney states that the couple was very much in love, and that they had met a Cazuza that no one had ever met. "An unarmed Cazuza, who, privately, was the sweetest person, who was charming, with whom I fell in love. He was affectionate, cute, you know? He trusted me. He knew that what I felt was true."

However, like any relationship, there are ups and downs. You could say that Ney and Cazuza's bass was drugs. Ney says that Cazuza disappeared for three days, and arrived home with a dirty cocaine dealer. "I said: 'Oh, you can get out of here. You and that guy, I don't want you in my house'. He spat at me. I slapped him and said: 'Oh, get out of here… drugged!' . And I was also a drug addict. He liked cocaine, I didn't like it. I won't say I didn't feel it, but I couldn't live with his lack of control over drugs."

Regarding jealousy, Ney states that he is, yes, jealous. But, at Cazuza's time, in the 70s, this feeling was impossible, it was "all free". "The boyfriend I had after Cazuza was very jealous of him. Once he asked me: 'Is he a good kisser?'. I said: 'Kisses'. 'Is he hot?' I said: 'Yeah'. He told me: 'I want to have sex with him'. But Cazuza had already told me. If they liked it? Well, it was just once. That certainly won't be on the Globo program, because I've never said that before", he said.

Finally, the singer couldn't help but talk about the disease that led to Cazuza's death, AIDS. "I'm alive. About 80% of my friends were taken away by AIDS, and I'm here." "I dated someone who died from it and I wasn't infected. We had regular sex without a condom. There's no explanation. I've asked several doctors, but no one could say. I would really like to know what it was about me that prevented this disease from catching me. God ? I don't think he's worried about my sexuality," he concluded.
