School closed after lesbian relationships

A public school in a South African province was closed after two students kissed this week in the dormitory.

According to the local press, the couple pointed out that there are another 27 “lesbian” students in the accommodation and that all of them were also expelled.

Officials from the country's Ministry of Education are investigating the case. In South Africa, prejudice based on sexual orientation is considered a crime, but homophobia is latent.

Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa told the Mercury newspaper that schools cannot expel students for being gay. “The school was visited by district officials and we will meet with those responsible to analyze the issue,” she said.

Around 300 students were accommodated in other centers, while others had to return home.
