Hope! 2nd case of HIV cure confirmed

Recent study carried out by scientists at the University of Cambridge and published in the scientific journal Lancet HIV brings a case of HIV cure.

The so-called “London patient” – whose real name is Adam Castillejo, a 40-year-old Venezuelan – was cured of the virus responsible for the development of AIDS in the body through a transplant of stem cells donated by individuals with an HIV-resistant gene . This is a similar treatment to one used nine years ago, when the “Berlin patient” (American Timothy Ray Brown) was cured of the same virus.

In the case of the “London patient”, however, the HIV DNA was not 100% eliminated from his body, as was the case with the “Berlin patient”. The difference between the two is that, in Castillejo's case, total body irradiation was not used and the chemotherapy regimen was less intense.

He has not shown signs of the virus for 30 months.
