State of Piauí also approves gay marriage; collective ceremony will be held in April

Another state joins the team of those in favor of same-sex marriage. Now it's Piauí's turn.

In June 2012, Grupo Matizes, an activist NGO in the state, requested the Court of Justice that homosexual marriage requests that arrived at Piauí's registry offices no longer depended on the individual deliberation of judges and had a common agreement established.

Because of the request, gay marriage becomes a reality in the State. Until then, only stable unions had been registered.

On April 5th a collective ceremony will be held to celebrate the fact. “A real, official marriage, registered at a registry office, will be the first”, informs Marinalva Santana, coordinator of Grupo Matizes.

“The ceremony is a watershed moment in favor of the rights of the LGT population. After the first marriages take place, we believe that many gays and lesbians will look to the Piauí registry offices in search of this right,” he adds.

In São Paulo, gay marriage comes into effect from this Friday (1).
