According to research published by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, the number of murders of gays and lesbians has increased in the US.
Over the past year, the country has recorded the highest number of LGBT victims. The report evaluated data collected in 16 states on cases of hate directed at the gay community and people affected by the AIDS virus.
In New York City, there was an increase in incidents motivated by homophobia, totaling a 13% increase according to the study.
The research also showed great prejudice on the part of the NY police, treating transsexuals with indifference, hostile attitudes and violence.
According to Sharon Stapel, executive director of the organization responsible for the study, the "numbers from New York cannot be ignored" and "we need to work together to put an end to the violence", she declared.
