USA: 90% of students have been harassed for being gay

Recent research in the United States with more than 7 students showed that the majority of them have been harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The survey found that 84% of students have been verbally harassed and 18% of them have been attacked because they are gay, lesbian or bisexual.

The study, promoted by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), interviewed 7.261 LGBT students aged between 13 and 21, across the North American territory.

GLSEN also found that 61% of respondents do not feel safe at school, while 62% of them do not report incidents of bullying to teachers because they fear the problem will become even bigger.

63% of students have been harassed because of their gender identity, while 12,5% said they were attacked for not acting "masculine" or "feminine."

"Our country has finally looked at the bullying more seriously, but it is important that gay students are not ignored in the effort to combat this public health crisis," noted GLSEN Director Eliza Byard.
