American university student Tyler Clementi (photo), 18, committed suicide two days after being caught by two roommates having sex with another man. The other students recorded the scene and broadcast it online.
Clementi jumped from a bridge in New Brunswick, New Jersey. According to the police, fishermen found the boy's body floating in the river, wearing only a watch, without any document that could identify him. The wallet with the student's ID was later located, in a corner of the bridge, on September 22nd.
Clementi warned that he would commit suicide in a message left on his Facebook page. The news of the boy's death came just two days after the university where he studied launched a program against bullying and the abuse of new technology. "Tyler was a good boy, and an incomparable musician," said the family's lawyer.
The student's roommates, Dharun Ravi and Molly W. Wei, both 18, are being sued for invasion of privacy. According to the local police department, they secretly placed the camera in Clementi's room so they could record him having sex on September 19th.
If convicted, the students could face 3 to 5 years in prison. Rutgers University, where Tyler Clementi studied, declined to comment on the case.
