USA: study shows that gays earn 23% less than straights

Gay men in management and leadership positions earn less than their heterosexual peers, according to research published today, Thursday 25th, in the United States by the University of New Hampshire.

According to research, men who live with other men earn on average 23% less than men married to a woman and 9% less than single heterosexuals. The information is from the website Advocate.com.

The employee-employer relationship is cited as the main reason for the difference in salaries, as the heterosexual boss tends to be closer to the straight employee as well.

"If the consumer prefers to interact with straight people, for example, the boss will act according to his position", highlighted the authors of the research.

The results also showed that lesbians do not suffer as much prejudice in the job market as homosexuals. According to the research, lesbians are generally seen as focused on work and are less likely to leave work to take care of a child – 18,1% of lesbians have a child compared to 49,4% among straight women.
