Pete Buttigieg, until then the only openly gay Democrat running in the primary elections, decided to leave the race.

The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, made the announcement this week after winning the Iowa caucuses and trailing Bernie Sanders in the New Hampshire primary and Joe Biden in the South Carolina primary.

Although he started as an unknown, Buttigieg grew to the point of coming in second place in New Hampshire and gaining great support from the white, educated portion of Americans.

Amy Klobuchar also dropped out of the race. Sanders remains with Elizabeth Warren, Biden – whom Buttigieg declared his support – and Michael Bloomberg in the race for the opportunity to face Donald Trump in this year's elections.
