The American state of Virginia this week became the 20th in the country to ban so-called “conversion therapy” for LGBT minors. And he also became the first in the southern region of the United States to ban the same practice.

The law was signed by Governor Ralph Northam (Democratic Party), who said in a statement to the newspaper The Washington Post consider the matter something “personal” to him. “I'm a pediatric neurologist who cares about thousands of children,” he said.

“Conversion therapy is not only based on false and discriminatory science, it is dangerous and causes long-term harm to our youth. No one should feel wrong for being who they are – especially a child. I am proud to sign this ban.”

The ban comes into effect from July 1st and does not apply to adults who choose to join the practice of their own free will.
