The most recent National Health Survey identified 18,4 million Brazilians with high cholesterol, that is, 12,5% of the population. And the most worrying thing is that – as this condition is silent – many people have the problem and don't even know it. To raise awareness of the importance of routine laboratory tests, free total cholesterol tests will be offered in São Paulo during the month of August. The action will take place in four Labi Exames units (see addresses below) for the first 1.000 people. For those who opt for a more in-depth analysis of blood fats, the chain also offers a 30% discount during August on a check-up that includes six tests: Total Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, VLDL Cholesterol, Non-HDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides . With this discount, the Blood Fat check-up costs R$17,50 in August. Cholesterol is a type of fat produced by the body itself, but – when not controlled – it is capable of causing serious diseases, especially related to the Cardiovascular System, such as heart attack and stroke. “Everyone has heard about good cholesterol (HDL), which protects the vessels from the accumulation of fat inside them and consequent obstruction, as well as bad cholesterol (LDL), which induces the accumulation of fat in the vessels. These obstructions in vessels throughout the body can lead to heart attack, peripheral arterial disease that makes walking difficult, kidney disease that impairs their functioning, as well as the risk of stroke with neurological sequelae and sudden death. Therefore, it is recommended to measure cholesterol periodically”, advises doctor Octavio Fernandes, from Labi Exames.
