Favela da Rocinha receives around 18 thousand in its first Gay Parade; see photos

The 24st Gay Parade in Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, took place this Sunday (1), which received around 18 thousand people during the demonstration through the streets of the community.

Organized by the Rocinha Residents Pro-Improvement Union (UPMMR), together with the Association of
Residents and Friends of the Barcellos neighborhood (AMABB), with the aim of combating prejudice against homosexual residents of the favela, the demonstration continued to Via Ápia, where a stage was set up for drag shows.

"The party was a request from the community. Many gays live here and they deserved an event like this", said Telmo Oliveira, director of the Neighborhood Association of Barcelos, one of the localities in Rocinha, to "Estadão".

To the sound of an electric trio, participants were entertained with hits by Ivete Sangalo, Beyoncé and even that of the queen of the shorties, Xuxa. B celebrities such as David Brazil, Mulher Maçã and Amin Khade were also present at the event.
