A ex-German player Thomas Hitzlsperger comes out of the closet motivated a statement from FIFA in support of athletes who decided to publicly admit their homosexuality.
“FIFA and its president [Joseph Blatter] support Thomas Hitzlsperger's decision to announce his sexual orientation. Unfortunately, prejudice still exists within football”, says an excerpt from the statement.
The entity also said that it has been working on numerous actions to end prejudice in sport.
“For many years, FIFA has taken action against any form of discrimination, including against sexual orientation, and is working hard to put an end to it and hopes that Thomas’ testimony will increase respect,” the text concludes.
