FIFA guarantees that LGBTs will be able to raise rainbow flags in Russia during the World Cup

Famous for its conservative and especially homophobic stance, Russia will not be able to punish people who raise flags during the World Cup. The International Football Federation itself, FIFA, guarantees this. According to UOL, the sport's highest entity and the Local Organizing Committee (COL) guaranteed that flags symbolizing LGBT pride can be displayed in stadiums. “There will definitely not be any type of ban for anyone using rainbow-colored symbols in Russia. It is clear that anyone can come here and not be fined for expressing their feelings”, Alexei Sorokin, CEO of COL, told Folha de S.Paulo. “Members of the public will be able to carry rainbow-colored flags, but logically FIFA and COL can reject those that do not follow the size standard. If the flags are displayed together with some type of message, we will evaluate it on a case-by-case basis”, informed FIFA.
