Strength Italy! Italian Senate begins discussing gay civil unions today

The plenary of the Senate of Italy began analyzing this Tuesday (2) the bill that authorizes the civil union between people of the same sex in the country.

Before considering the approximately 6 amendments presented mostly by opposition parliamentarians – an obstruction tactic –, the Upper Chamber rejected a question of unconstitutionality and a request to return the initiative to the house's committees.

Authored by the senator Monica Cirinnà, from the center-left Democratic Party (PD), the project provides for the possibility for homosexuals to register their partners' children, but only in the absence of the other biological father.

However, gay or lesbian couples would remain prohibited from adopting children. Furthermore, the new law includes a de facto equality between marriage and civil union, but only the latter would be accessible to homosexuals.

Because of the proposal, the PD has been under pressure from one of its main allies in the government, the conservative Nova Centro-Right (NCD), to remove the articles on adoption, but, to date, they remain in the project.
