One of the few and rare openly gay sportspeople in the world, football player Robbie Rogers announced his retirement, at the age of 30, after an ankle injury. Athlete for LA Galaxy, a team from the United States, Robbie came out as homosexual in 2013. Working in a sexist field that is intolerant of sexual diversity, the player lamented, in a Facebook post, that it took him so long to publicly come out about his sexual orientation and lives it in its fullness. Rogers is currently married to Greg Berlanti and they are parents to little Caleb Berlanti. “My only regret from my career was spending 11 years in the closet,” he said. “I wish I had the courage of so many young people who can live honestly and openly as gay men,” Robbie wrote. “These young people who inspired me to overcome my fears and return to playing. They are still the young people who send me letters every week. To these young people, I say thank you! The greatest achievement of my career has been helping to create a more welcoming sport for you,” he continued.
