Gay killed by neo-Nazis in Chile could give name to law that criminalizes homophobia

The young Chilean Daniel Zamudio, who was already brain dead, his death was made official on Tuesday night (27).

On March 3, Daniel was attacked by a group of neo-Nazis in the center of Santiago. The criminals marked the young man's abdomen with the Nazi symbol, burned several parts of his body with a cigarette and cut off a piece of his ear.

All of Chile was moved by the boy's death. The Minister of Health and some of the country's deputies even visited Daniel in the hospital.

"I have the impression that many people think that cases like the attack on Daniel are isolated, but they are not," said Jose Miranda, a friend of Daniel's.

It is now expected that the Anti-Discrimination Law, which punishes crimes against homosexuals, will be approved by congress. The project has been in progress since 2005, but was vetoed several times in votes.

The Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement, the main Chilean NGO, is pressing for the law to be sanctioned and to be called Zamudio.
