Gays and transgenders will have exclusive space in penitentiaries.

Last Thursday (17), a resolution was published in the Official Gazette of the Union with standards for the treatment of LGBTS in national penitentiaries.
As of publication, transvestites and transsexuals will have the right to have their social name on the prison admission form. They should even be addressed by that name.

The penitentiary must also create specific living spaces for transvestites and gays deprived of liberty in male prison units, as long as this is the inmate's wishes.

Male and female transgender people must be sent to female prison units, notes the text. Transsexual women must be guaranteed equal treatment with other women deprived of liberty.

The resolution also includes equality of conditions, the benefit of imprisonment assistance to the dependents of the insured inmate, including the spouse or partner of the same sex. LGBTs will also be able to receive intimate visits and transvestites will be able to choose whether they want to keep their hair long and whether they prefer masculine or feminine clothes.
