Lula government schedules first national GLBT conference for 2008

In a decree published last Wednesday, the 28th, the Lula government scheduled the XNUMXst National Conference of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals for May next year, which will be chaired by the Secretary of Human Rights Paulo Vannuchi. The theme of the conference will be “Human Rights and Public Policies: the path to guaranteeing citizenship for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals”.

According to Julian Rodrigues, from the Edson Neris Institute and member of the National Organizing Committee appointed by ABGLT (Brazilian Association of Gays, Lesbians, Transvestites, Transsexuals and Bisexuals), the conference is the result of demands from organized civil society itself and also the maturation of policies public events to affirm GLBT citizenship, which have been carried out by the federal government since the launch of the Brazil without Homophobia program in 2004.

"The conference is now a fact, there is no turning back. Let's roll up our sleeves and build it in all States, mobilizing as many members of our community as possible, discussing rights and affirmative public policies", says the activist.

The event, which takes place in Brasília, will be attended by delegates from public authorities (executive, legislative and judiciary), and representatives from civil society, in the proportion of 40% for the first group and 60% for the last.

"There are countries with more advanced legislation and policies, but it will be the first time that a federal government convenes a broad Conference, with majority participation from the organized movement, to define a national public policy plan for around 10% of the population, historically relegated to the prejudice and discrimination", comments Julian Rodrigues.
