Trump administration says transgender people may be discriminated against at work

The Trump administration filed a petition last Friday (16) alleging that transgender people do not have protections under federal civil rights laws, which serve to prohibit discrimination based on sex in the workplace.

According to information from the Conjur website, the government's argument was supported by Attorney General Noel Francisco, based on the Civil Rights Law of 1964.

“In 1964, the ordinary meaning of “sex” to the public was biological sex. This does not encompass transgender status,” the petition says. “The legislation was originally created to eliminate discrimination against minorities. It is especially clear that the law prohibited discrimination based on sex only because of the unequal treatment of men and women at work.”
