I believed that heteronormativity was the jargon of boring activists who think everything is homophobia. But now you can see what it's like.
As soon as I bought the carnival package, I gave my name and my boyfriend's name, and said in clear letters, double bed, and it even came with the voucher. When we arrived at the hotel, the receptionist came across us and asked us to wait, as the room was being prepared. Upon entering the room we noticed that there were two single beds.
Calling the reception I asked why the bed wouldn't be a double, as requested when booking, he didn't understand, and asked: "Do you want two double beds in the room?", he thought it would be easier for us to be eccentric and sleep in double beds, each with two singles, rather than calculating the obvious. We are a couple, so we sleep in a married bed. I immediately replied, "no, I want just one double bed, not two", a pause came on the other end of the call, and then he understood, the penny dropped.
Do we give little attention? Do I need to work harder on showing that I'm gay? Doesn't my Chanel bag count? Jokes aside, continuing with the day, we went to the pool. At a certain point, I started receiving affection and hugs, and I asked him to stop. I soon heard, "you suffer from internalized homophobia", I replied that I don't like to bother those around me, not that I agree that they have the right to be bothered by my affectionate exchanges, but that I don't like to cause discomfort. I admire those who don't have this type of nerve, and it's these people who show up and break prejudice and make everything evolve, but honestly I don't know how to do that. Without false modesty, I replied that I do much more than most in favor of the fight against homophobia.
When we arrived at the room, the bed had already been changed, and we received great treatment from all the hotel staff, including the heteronormative receptionist. I honestly don't believe that this type of behavior is done out of malice, I believe it's just ignorance.
