The Supreme Court of the United States ruled this Monday (15), in International LGBT Pride Month, that it is illegal to discriminate against LGBT citizens in the workplace. It is an expansion of the civil rights act passed in 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, national origin or gender.

The decision has caused surprise, as the Court has tilted to the right in recent years – of the nine ministers, three voted for the bill, one of them being Brett Kavanaugh, chosen by President Donald Trump for the post in 2018, despite being accused of having raped women.

Just this month, the Trump administration caused a setback in the rights of transgender people by revoking a resolution from the Barack Obama administration. The Republican government basically published a rule that characterizes gender as “male or female defined by biology”.
