Man who poured boiling water on gay couple sentenced to 40 years in prison

Martin Blackwell, better known as the homophobe who poured boiling water over his girlfriend's son and her partner while they slept, was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The victims, Anthony Gooden e Marquez Tolbert, suffered second and third degree burns to their back, neck and arms. Anthony had to be in a medically induced coma and Marquez spent 10 days undergoing surgery in the hospital.

After the attack, Martin told the pair to "get out of my house with all that gay shit" before kicking them out of the apartment.

Martin, who was jailed without bail, later told investigators: "They were stuck together like two hot dogs, so I poured some hot water on them... They'll be fine, it was just some hot water. "

After the attack, a page was created asking for donations to cover medical expenses for the victims, raising more than $70.000, well over its initial goal of $40.000.

Shortly afterwards, Marquez spoke about the effects of the burns:

"The pain won't let me sleep. It's unbearable, 24 hours a day. When I'm in the sun it hurts, it's basically like you're being burned all over again."
