Hospitals in SP will perform surgeries for transgender men; USP adopts social name

"Bom Dia Brasil" aired this Monday morning (17) a report on surgeries for transgender men, which will now be carried out in SUS (Unified Health System) hospitals.

The article makes a mistake right at the beginning by calling trans men "trans women", whereas it is the opposite, as they are people who are biologically female who wish to adapt their body to their gender identity, in this case, male. The operations will be to remove the uterus and tubes.

Among those interviewed on the program is the former president of the São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade Association (APOGLBT), Alexandre Santos, known as Xandão. In the report, he said that he has felt like a man since he was eight years old. According to the article, Xande should undergo surgery by the end of this year.

USP adopts the use of the social name
The general secretariat of the University of São Paulo (USP) issued a circular last Friday (14) announcing that it will adopt state law 55.588/2010, which gives the right to transvestites and transsexuals to use their social name on registration and course completion diploma. The measure will come into effect this year.

The state of São Paulo has municipal and state decrees that give this right to transgender people. Both decrees allow that, in addition to their social name in schools and universities, transvestites and transsexuals can obtain, for example, a Single Ticket with their social name.
