“The Catholic Church believes that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Sex determination for this purpose is based on biology.”

With these words, the Scottish Catholic Church took a stand against a law in the country that provides for changes to simplify gender recognition legislation. The first version was recently released by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Through the Catholic Parliamentary Office of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, the institution condemned the initiative, arguing that legislators “do not have the right” to “redefine” the “natural law” of marriage and gender.

According to the Church, “changing” these concepts implies “confusion, disrupts the balance of society and our natural instinct regarding marriage between a man and a woman and the flourishing of the family.” Gay marriage was legalized in Scotland five years ago.
