India gains first publishing house for gay audiences

For this, Gandhi did not expect – or perhaps yes, if the hypothesis that the leader was gay are correct: India gained its first publishing house aimed at the LGBT public.

Founded by 45-year-old activist Shobhna S. Kumar, Queer Ink first emerged as a virtual bookstore aimed at the homosexual public and, after completing a catalog of more than 500 books, 90 of which were written by Indian authors, it has just been launched on the publishing market in the populous Asian country.

"Publishing [LGBT literature] is a necessity, as very little is known about gay India," Kumar told the EFE news agency. "Our goal is to give greater visibility to the gay community and therefore show that, despite what some people think, homosexuals are an important part of India."

The first book published by Queer Ink will be Out! (Outside!), a compilation of 30 stories about "the new gay India" that was born in July 2009, when homosexuality ceased to be a crime in the country.

Kumar also reported that he received a large number of manuscripts and that many writers approached the company. A sign that the niche has everything to succeed.
