Indonesia cancels gay meeting for fear of protests

Indonesian police banned a continental gathering of gays and lesbians taking place over the weekend in the city of Surabaya, saying it could provoke protests from conservative groups.

Homosexuality is not prohibited in Indonesia, but it is prohibited under Islamic law, which is defended by conservative Muslims.

According to the organizers, the police had already authorized the event. Now, the groups decide whether to hold the event clandestinely.
