(Portugues e Ingles) Today is the LGBTQ parade here in Los Angeles, as is Pride Month. Why is it so important? When I was growing up, I constantly heard LGBTQ jokes in all the schools I attended. Vera Cruz, Santa Cruz and also at FGV where I got my degree. It wasn’t all students but many, including some “teachers”. When I started working in advertisement as a Director, I remember adult men passing around a note in a meeting saying “the director is a faggot”. I was fired before shooting a beer & soccer comercial after the clients heard my “effeminate” voice in a meeting. Years after, I came out on the internet, newspapers and Television, exactly because we should not and can not silence our voices, we need to take a position. I received messages, some public, others anonymous thanking my position and supporting my stance. On the other hand, I also received threats of violence, that I should be beaten to death. Taking into account that I am a white, privileged, cis-male, I imagine how much of those that did not have these shields, suffer. I once interviewed a huge banker that said privilege should be exerted with responsibility. That is why I will continue to raise the LGBTQ flag with pride and confidence. The Pride Parade is not about partying and “having a good time”. The Pride Parade is our means of exerting our voices. It is to show: we are here, we are strong, we will not stand back; we will prevail. For countless years, the Catholic church has promoted a bloody persecution against us people, using the words of Paul of Tarsus, St. Paul, that has institutionalized homophobia in politics, education and sports. With the advance of promoters and instigators of hate, I leave clear our position: we are many and we will not bow down.
