Israel: Progressive rabbis want to institute gay marriage ceremonies

A group of rabbis in Israel are trying to create a model for holding wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples. Progressives are being heavily attacked by the more orthodox, who are publicly opposed to the idea.

In an interview with the newspaper "The Jewish Daily Foward", the rabbis said they intend to establish the same parameters as heterosexual ceremonies for gay unions. The founder of the Jewish church's LGBT group, Jay Michaelson, declared that it is a "shame" that such ceremonies still do not take place today. For Michaelson, the Jewish community needs to become more "contemporary."

In parallel with the group of LGBT rabbis, the conservatives and Orthodox are creating a petition against the idea and want to formalize therapies carried out by the church with the aim of "transforming gays into heterosexuals".
