US newspaper refuses gay marriage announcement

The announcement of a gay marriage was rejected by the newspaper "Union Leader", in Manchester, in the State of New Hampshire, United States, for being against same-sex unions.

The outlet claimed to have the constitutional right to choose what will or will not be published on its pages. The announcement was about a ceremony between two men, scheduled to take place last Saturday, in the city of Portsmouth.

Joseph McQuaid, responsible for the publication, declared that he considers marriage to be an act only between a man and a woman. "The law does not punish gay marriage, but it also does not ask churches to celebrate it, nor does it impede our right to publish what we want," he said.

Despite circulating in New Hampshire, where same-sex marriage is legal, "Union Leader" is also present in states opposed to gay civil unions.
