Lady Gaga steals the show with pro-gay speech at the VMAs; see highlights

While the pop music divas were worried about their outfit for their triumphant entrance at the 2011 VMAs (Video Music Awards), Lady Gaga appeared wearing a suit, pants, a simple white t-shirt and with a cigarette in her mouth. With her alter ego Jo Calderone, the singer literally caused the celebration, which took place yesterday at the Nokia Theater, in Los Angeles.

In her first appearance of the night, Gaga performed alongside "Queen" guitarist Brian May with the hit "You and I." She then presented the "Michel Jackson for Vanguard" award to Britney Spears, the night's big honoree, as well as Amy Winehouse who received a "Valerie" tribute by Bruno Mars.

Gaga praised the “little pop princess”, stating that she was always inspired by the singer. Still from Jo Calderone, she tried to kiss Britney. "No, I've done this before", recalled the honoree, referring to her kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs. When she went to receive the award for "Best Female Video", Gaga said that even from Jo Calderone she couldn't help but thank her "monsters". Soon after, she stated that "it doesn't matter if you are gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgender... You were born this way", citing the title of her recent album "Born This Way".

Although Lagy Gaga stole the show, the big winner of the night was Katy Perry, with three statuettes of the night's main awards. With a very eye-catching outfit (pink hair and a yellow cube-shaped hat), the singer won "Best Video of the Year", with "Firework". The awards for best special effects and best collaboration, both for "ET" (along with Kanye West), Katy also won.

The performances that most excited the public, in addition to Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, were from Adele and Chris Brown. With the audience on their feet, the British singer rocked "Someone Like You", accompanied by a piano. The American singer took advantage of the playback as he flew over the theater, with pirouettes and lots and lots of frills.

Last but not least: Beyoncé. This time, the singer not only surprised the audience with her show, but with the announcement of her pregnancy. At the end of the performance, Beyoncé, 29, pointed her belly at the cameras, revealing that she was expecting her first child with rapper Jay-Z.
