Actor Leonar Vieira, who has worked on soap operas on TV Globo and Record, left the country with his husband, after receiving death threats for being gay.
Leonardo told the newspaper Extras, who currently lives in Portugal with her husband and reported the threats she suffered here in Brazil.
“Several factors were decisive for my change. Firstly, the search for a better quality of life. This includes living better while spending less. In Portugal, homophobia is much lower than in Brazil, I don't face death threats for being me, as has happened in my country. Here, someone's death from violence is news for weeks, as it's not like in Brazil where people die from a stray bullet every day. Here I feel safe coming and going, day or night. I'm not afraid of being robbed and even murdered during a robbery. I'm not afraid of the police and being extorted by them. There is no president here who cuts education and encourages the use of weapons by children. Here in Portugal the extreme right is not in power. These are some of the reasons and they are enough for me to have chosen to live in Portugal. Oh, of course, I’m a Portuguese citizen”, said Leonardo Vieira.
