Lesbian is compensated for homophobic harassment

A lesbian student who said she was a victim of homophobia and discrimination at a California school has received $25 in compensation.

Rochelle Hamilton, 16, said she was forced to attend a counseling group that told gay students they had chosen their sexual orientations and would have difficulty finding jobs. She also alleged that teachers made comments about her appearance, denied her access to the women's locker room and told her to stop hugging her girlfriend.

Hamilton, who came out as gay at 13, said: “All I ever wanted was to be able to go to school and just be myself. But I couldn't do that while the people, who were supposed to be teaching me, were judging me and telling me there was something wrong with me. How could I learn if I was constantly scared?”
