Lesbians are allowed to adopt in Florida

Vanessa Alenier and Melanie Leon were allowed by a judge in Florida to adopt a 1-year-old girl. In the North American state, a law that has existed for 33 years prohibits gays and lesbians from adopting.

The couple, who live in Hollywood, celebrated Judge Maria Sampedro-Iglesia's decision – this is the judge's third ruling in favor of a homosexual couple.

“We knew we were going to be mothers,” said Alenier, who had custody of the child since she was looked after by social workers. “It’s wonderful that this happened to us,” she added. “It changed our lives.”

In her ruling, Judge Sampedro-Iglesia declared that Florida's adoption law is “unconstitutional.”
