Literature and cinema

In recent days, the specialized literature sections, with their "best seller" lists, have been displaying the book "Water for Elephants" in first place. Probably those who didn't know it in print are now in the know, after the work reached the cinema.

In addition to putting it on the list, this week's Veja magazine made a small comment, which I thought was cool, although it's not exactly new. After hitting the big screen, the book simply soared in sales. To give you an idea, it was launched in 2007. In three years it sold 40.000 copies, which is not bad at all. However, it was to debut in the cinema to go from nothing bad straight to the phenomenon. In just two months, 50.000 more were sold, that is, 10 more than had been achieved in three years.

Well, I now fit the comment into my artistic trajectory. Not that I'm going to complain about the performance of my two books. DOMINATION and KING SIZE BED (available in traditional format – printed – and also in e-book at www.comprelivrosgls.com.br), maintaining the appropriate proportions, until they sell properly. But, think about it, what would happen if a daring director decided to turn one of the two into a film? Several readers, including people in the industry, have already said that they are practically ready-made scripts. Yes, one of the main characteristics always mentioned is the cinematographic language used to describe the scenes.

Personally, I believe that the KING SIZE BED would be, let's say, more popular, as it doesn't involve so much fetish. On the other hand, the controversial DOMINATION would perhaps be more successful, due to the strength of its scenes and the violence, something many people love to see in the cinema.

Returning to the subject of the magazine, another detail that draws attention to this double feature is the use of images of actors to compose the look. Typically, editions released in the wake of films feature the protagonists on the cover. Now imagine, if the delightful Robert Pattinson, who is in "Water for Elephants" alongside Reese Witherspoon, made a cameo in the film based on my "work"? I was done, wasn't I?
