Wrestler could be sentenced to 30 years in prison for infecting two partners with HIV

The fighter Michael Johnson, aged 23, could be sentenced to 30 years in prison for having infected two sexual partners with HIV and exposing four others to the virus, in St. Louis, in the south of the USA.

The fighter claims to be innocent and that the relationship without a condom was done with the consent of the partners, who would also be responsible. The prosecution argues that he had sex over a period of 10 months, after learning that he was already infected.

"Not only did he fail to disclose (that he had HIV). When he was specifically asked if he was 'clean,' he lied," said prosecutor Philip Groenweghe, the New York Daily News reported.

The athlete, who was national university champion in the wrestling category in 2012, is on trial. In addition to the possible 30 years in prison, he could face an additional 5 or 15 years for the other four charges.
