Most Australian women are in favor of GLBT rights

The majority of Australian women do not support the war in Iraq and their country's immigration policy, research from the The Australian Women's Weekly released this Wednesday (28).

However, the interviewees approve of GLBT rights and homosexual sex. Around 15 women over the age of 20 participated in the survey, which sought to focus on issues such as education, motherhood and immigration.

About 1/3 of those interviewed disapprove of Australia's decision to send troops to Iraq and 60% of them said immigration policies should be better controlled. More than 70% of women said that same-sex couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples.

For the magazine's editor, Deborah Thomas, the results are surprising. “What’s most interesting about this data is that although the majority of Australian women want greater control over immigration, they are more tolerant of their compatriots’ sexuality,” she said.
