The majority of ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) voted last Thursday (7) against banning the MSM population (men who have sex with men) from donating blood – before that, these people were allowed to donate only after a period of 12 months of sexual abstinence.

The trial of the action, which takes place via virtual plenary, ends at 23:59 pm this Friday (8).

ADI (direct action of unconstitutionality) 5543 is based on the principle that the veto, arising from a provision by the Ministry of Health and a resolution by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency), is homophobic.

This is an old demand of many MSM – and which, now during the new coronavirus pandemic, takes on a new dimension, as blood donation may be necessary in the recovery of patients who have become infected with Covid-19.
