Public Ministry will investigate racist and homophobic offense against gay couple in Rio

The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) will investigate the sending of a letter with a homophobic and racist message to a couple of gay men in Vicente de Carvalho, north of Rio de Janeiro.

The apocryphal letter was left in the window of the house where they have lived for about a month and spread on social media. The suspicion is that neighbors wrote the letter.

The couple received the letter last week and posted the contents on the internet. The letter has a homophobic section stating that “God did not create man to have relationships with men nor for relationships between women”. In addition to this, another excerpt says: "Spare us (sic) and our children from living with people like you! People of color and, on top of that, effeminate people are not at the level of those who live (sic) here.”

The investigation will be carried out by the 22nd Prosecutor's Office of Justice and Criminal Investigation of the MPRJ, which handles cases registered at the 27th Police Station, where the victims filed a complaint.

Last Thursday (26), the prosecutor of the Human and Minority Rights Advisory, Eliane Pereira, and the deputy attorney general for Justice and Criminal and Human Rights Affairs, Alexandre Araripe, were alerted about the increase in crimes motivated by hatred for the former special coordinator of Sexual Diversity at Rio City Hall Carlos Tufvesson.
