European soap opera will address transsexuality in adolescence

The soap opera "Hollyoaks", shown on the English channel Channel 4", will have a transsexual character in its plot from August onwards. According to the producers, Jasmine, the transsexual teenager, "is a boy trapped in a girl's body".

Jasmine will play the overprotected daughter of the Costello family, who returns from a trip from the United States. The role will be played by actress Victoria Atkin (photo). The producers reveal that at the beginning of the season viewers will learn that Jasmine leads a double life, dressing like Jason, away from the eyes of her family.

To create the character, the "Hollyoaks" writers spoke to entities that deal with the issue of transsexuality in adolescence. Among them the "Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation", which is located in London, and last year received 97 teenagers who felt like they were in a foreign body. Half of the people received by the clinic were 14 years old or younger.

Based on this, the approach to the character Jasmine will aim to raise the discussion around the trans issue among young people under age.
