“My son is still treated like a defendant”, says mother of gay man murdered at 14

"They want to disqualify him by saying that he was a drug user, they even requested a toxicological test. My son is still treated as a defendant", said Angélica Ivo, 38, mother of Alexandre, murdered in June, during the second act " Alexandre (V)Ivo", which took place this Tuesday (07), in front of the São Gonçalo Forum (RJ), where the second hearing of the case was also held.

In her protest, Angélica Ivo criticized São Gonçalo City Hall and the city's City Council for ignoring her son's murder. "Look how cool, I just received a tribute from the City Council. During these five months, I didn't receive any solidarity from the Council, because of that I feel very comfortable demanding it, as I didn't have the support of the Executive of my city", he protested .

"I had to turn to the State for support. You can't imagine the pain I'm going through, the pain Ale went through, it was three hours of torture! I never thought that behavior would bother me so much, that being beautiful, intelligent and happy would cause the death of my son", said Angélica, who also revealed that it was "very painful" to expose her "pain" to seek "justice". "Alexandre's sexual orientation doesn't matter, but the violence he suffered."

Angélica warned the population of São Gonçalo that anyone can be a victim of brutal crimes. "I want the people of São Gonçalo to realize that it can happen to anyone. I fight so that PLC 122 can, in a while, protect other lives and, for that, we will have to join our fight with the movement black, women and unions", concluded Angélica.

Alexandre Ivo's father, Paulo Rajão, who lives in Belém (PA), also attended the event. "I'm heartbroken. Everything has collapsed in my life… I can't speak," he said, leaving the microphone deeply emotional. Another memorable moment was when one of Alexandre's best friends, Jacy, spoke.

"I was the last one to have contact with Ale... The same ones who killed him were the same ones who attacked me. Ale didn't see the fight, he was a peaceful person and was terrified of trouble. It's been five months, but it's still difficult knowing that he won't be there (Praça do Zé Garoto). We used to meet every day to catch up. Now he doesn't live here anymore, he's just in our hearts", he said crying, and then hugged Angélica.

After the speeches, the event featured a performance by singer Sandro. "I want to offer this song to my friend Angélica, Alexandre and anyone who has suffered the stupidity of violence." On the guitar, the song "Imagine", by John Lennon.

Key witness
At around 18pm yesterday, the second hearing in the Alexandre Ivo case began. The objective was to listen to witnesses for the prosecution and defense. According to Marco Duarte, Angélica's cousin, the atmosphere became tense due to the defense witnesses, who contradicted themselves in their testimonies.

Marco told the reporter that the most tense moment was when judge Patrícia Acioli, who is handling the case, heard Kleber's testimony (surname not disclosed). The boy lives in front of the land where Alexandre Ivo's murder took place. Duarte reported that at first the witness told the police that she had seen the crime.

However, on a second occasion, when he was called to testify, Kleber said he had not seen anything. What also caught attention was that the boy showed up with a lawyer and, reportedly, due to his socioeconomic condition, he would not be able to pay for a professional.

The judge, upon noticing the deponent's contradiction, warned him that if he was lying, he would be arrested. It was then ordered that the police will go to Kleber's house to carry out scientific examination and verify whether or not it is possible, from his residence, to observe the scene of the crime. The next hearing takes place on February 03rd.
