The Brazilian Congress urgently needs more LGBT politicians, but also those who are committed to our cause. Recently, former boxer Acelino Popó de Freitas announced his affiliation with the PDT and subsequent candidacy for the Federal Senate for the state of Bahia. In a post on social media, the boxing champion said: “This time, my fight is in a suit and tie, with paper and pen, for the greater good of my land and my country.” Father of a young gay man, Popó assured: “I'm very proud to say that I have a clean record, against prejudice, in favor of the family, no matter how it is formed. I will fight harder for sport as social inclusion, for the less privileged, for the LGBT cause, for the good of my Bahian people”, he added. Popó was elected federal deputy for Bahia in 2011, at the time affiliated with the PRB.
