Pope Benedict praises Americans who oppose gay marriage

Before his first visit to the United States, which should take place between April 15th and 20th, Pope Benedict praised, this Friday (16th), North Americans who oppose gay marriage and abortion in a speech made to the new American ambassador to Italy, Mary Ann Glendon.

The pontiff addressed topics such as sensitive political issues and family, claiming that "the institution of marriage, recognized as a stable union between a man and a woman", must be protected.

Gay marriage is a major political issue in the US. More than 25 states have constitutional amendments that prohibit marriage between homosexuals. Only the state of Massachusetts allows same-sex marriages.
