Parliamentarians launch LGBT Parliamentary Front and national campaign for gay marriage

Last Wednesday (30) the new Mixed Parliamentary Front for the Citizenship of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals (LGBT) was launched, with the participation of 175 parliamentarians.

At the launch, senator Marta Suplicy (PT-SP) once again criticized the setback that Brazil has suffered on LGBT rights issues. "While Argentina today has gay marriage, Brazil has beatings on Avenida Paulista", criticized the senator.

The Front, for now, will be chaired by Marta Suplicy and Jean Wyllys (PSO -RJ), who at the launch revealed that they will present a Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) to guarantee the right to marriage for same-sex couples.

The federal deputy explained that a stable union and marriage are different things and that, even if the Federal Supreme Court recognizes a stable union for gay couples, they will have to go to court to prove that they live together. Wyllys also believes that the Front's focus must be on combating homophobia.

National campaign for civil union
Parliamentarians took advantage of the launch of the LGBT Parliamentary Front and launched a national campaign for the approval of gay marriage.

The idea is headed by Marta Suplicy and Jean Wyllys and was attended by Pedro Zerolo, secretary of Social Movements of the Spanish Workers' Party (PSOE), who launched a similar campaign and managed to approve equal marriage in the Zapatero government, which is at the end of mandate.

The Spanish leader said he is proud of Latin America's progress in combating inequalities. Zerolo stated that he believes that Spain played a fundamental role in this Latin American advance and that the country serves as an inspiration around the world. He also stated that Brazil plays a fundamental role in the world. "Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay are already on this path, now Brazil is missing, which is a fundamental country in Latin America and the world," said Zerolo.

“I’m here to join the cause, which is already mine”, says Preta Gil at the launch of the SP Gay Parade
