Parliament of Portugal approves gay marriage law

A bill from the Socialist Government that allows civil marriage between people of the same sex was approved today by the Parliament of Portugal.

The vote had the support of the entire parliamentary left. José Sócatres, Portuguese Prime Minister, classified the result as a "historic moment for Portugal in the fight against discrimination and injustice that existed in Portuguese society".

Despite approval, the right to adoption for homosexual couples has not yet been permitted.
