Gay skater responds to homophobic statements

The French presenters' statements about skater Johnny Weir's performance have given people something to talk about. At a press conference, one of the presenters provoked again and said that the skater "tries to be more feminine on the ice". The narrator also stated that Johnny has the right to "be whoever he wants, but that's really annoying, because now everyone thinks that skater boys are like him."

The skater refuted the comments in a press conference. Johnny stated that the commentators did not criticize his skating but rather his "person". He revealed he was "angry to learn of the comments" and said he just wants freedom for people. "I hope that children who grow up like me can feel the freedom I had to be myself. That's the most important thing," said Weir.

Then Johnny said that he was always seen as "the extravagant boy who wore a crown of roses". For him, masculinity “is what we want to do”. The young athlete also revealed that he had a "particular" perception regarding masculinity. "I discovered that masculinity and femininity are outdated concepts. There is a new generation of people who don't define themselves by their gender or their race."
