For the first time in Asia, a gay flag will be raised on a public building

A gay flag will be raised on the city hall building in the city of Taipe, capital of the Chinese province of Taiwan, during the opening of the seventh edition of the “Movement for GLBT civil rights – Tapie 2006”. “Conservative and religious groups have been critical of the event, and we welcome different opinions. We will invite these groups to discuss gay rights issues together,” commented Yeh Jie-sheng, municipal secretary. Organized by the secretary of civil affairs and with the help of NGOs, the festival was the first government-funded gay event in the country. The city hall sets aside money each year in its budget for the festival, which aims to make gay issues more visible. The festival, which starts on September 17th, runs until October 5th, with an exhibition of arts, films and the gay parade, which takes place on September 30th.
