Pentagon makes it difficult to expel gays from military service

Yesterday, the Pentagon released new rules to make it more difficult to expel homosexuals from the United States Armed Forces. According to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the guidance is the result of a 45-day analysis of what the Pentagon could do in the short term and to allow for implementation in a "fair and most appropriate manner."

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama had suggested the repeal of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. However, homosexual activists lamented the way Obama has handled the case, without major changes so far.

The Pentagon now requires information about sexuality to be given under oath. The use of "hearsay statements or rumors" is also discouraged. This measure is to limit the expulsions of military personnel “out of the closet” by third parties.

"These modifications are effective immediately and will apply to all open and future cases," Gates said.
